Still Hurting from Hurricane Irene? Help is on the Way

Volunteers Coming to Long Island to Address Ongoing
Needs Stemming from Storm’s Aftermath

Hempstead, NY – September 21, 2012 – Catholic Charities, Long Island Volunteer Center and Health & Welfare Council of Long Island announced today that volunteers from the Christian Reformed Worldwide Relief Committee (CRWRC) will be available to assist Long Islanders still struggling to recover from Hurricane Irene. Walk-in centers will be set up from October 1 through October 11 throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties.

CRWRC’s Disaster Response Services trained volunteers, known as the ‘Green Shirts’ for their attire, will be canvassing neighborhoods and collecting information to create a comprehensive needs assessment, which will assist local volunteer organizations as they work to address unmet hurricane-related needs, such as housing, debris clean up, and transportation, etc. Local residents who had previously applied to FEMA or were not eligible for FEMA assistance are still able to participate in local resource assistance through this program.
