The Deer Park School District will host the annual Long Island Theatre in Our Schools Mini-Conference on Saturday, March 8, presented by the American Alliance for Theatre and Education. The conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Deer Park’s district office, located at 1881 Deer Park Ave., Deer Park, NY 11729.
Showcasing Deer Park’s ongoing support for theater education, the event will be an invaluable professional development resource for theater teachers at every grade level. It will feature networking opportunities for theater companies, directors and producers and a variety of workshops on topics such as musical theater, play production, Shakespeare, improvisation and theater in the Common Core.
The event’s keynote speaker will be acclaimed Broadway producer Stewart F. Lane, who has been nominated for 13 Tony awards, winning five for “War Horse,” “Jay Johnson: The Two and Only,” “Will Rogers Follies,” “La Cage Aux Folles” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” Lane, co-owner of Broadway’s Palace Theatre and the president and CEO of Stellar Productions International and Stewart F. Lane Productions, has also been nominated for and received numerous other theater honors including four Drama Desk Awards, a Drama Critics Circle Award, an Outer Circle Critics Award and a Drama League Award. He won his first Olivier Award in 2013 for his West End production of Irving Berlin’s “Top Hat.” Lane’s talk, “What Schools Can Learn from a Broadway Producer,” will prove enlightening and educational for all participants.
