Students at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School were recently recognized for winning competitions from Covanta and the Suffolk County Reading Council art contest, showing their ambitious artistic skills.
The Covanta recycling poster contest, open to all kindergarten through sixth grade students on Long Island, required students to illustrate the importance of recycling. Three JFK students were named prize winners, with third-grader Hannau Rau taking the contest’s grand prize for students in grades kindergarten to third grade. In the grades four to six category, Jayden Pasco placed second and Christine Nguyen took third. The three young artists were honored at a Covanta reception and given trophies, certificates and prizes.

Another JFK student, Rebecca Warkenthien, was awarded an honorable mention in the Suffolk County Reading Council’s art cover contest. The school has entered the contest, in both the writing and art categories, for many years, resulting in JFK being named a SCRC Honor School for the past decade; however, this marked one of the first times that a JFK student had been recognized for this award. Warkenthien was honored at a reception sponsored by the Suffolk County Reading Council, and her winning art will be published in the SCRC’s journal, to be distributed throughout Suffolk County.
