Three Deer Park Middle Schoolers Win EcoTech Scholarships

Deer Park eighth-graders Samuel Escobar, Samantha Howe and Alan Korsiak were selected as finalists in the Babylon Covantage EcoTech Scholarship Competition and presented with their awards at the town’s annual Earth Day celebration held at Babylon Town Hall.

Event sponsor Covanta, which operates an energy-from-waste facility in West Babylon, offers the townwide scholarship opportunity each year as part of an ongoing initiative to encourage young scientists to research renewable energy sources, greenhouse gas reduction and the development of alternative building materials.

Escobar’s project, “Heating Oil,” earned him fifth place and a $200 scholarship prize. Korsiak was awarded seventh place and $125 for his project, “The Effects of Garden Insulation on a Building Rooftop.” Howe received honorable mention and a $100 check for her research, titled “Flaming Peanuts.”
