Community Breast Cancer Walk Set for N. Babylon High

When it came time to choose a community service project for her Girl Scout Gold Award, North Babylon High School senior Arielle Gelosi, a member of Troop 3163, chose a cause close to her heart – breast cancer awareness and education. In 2008, Arielle’s mother Theresa Gelosi passed away from breast cancer following a two-year battle with the disease.

In order to successfully obtain the Gold Award, a Girl Scout must create a service project that will not only provide her community with immediate assistance, but will also continue to contribute to the community in the future. For Arielle’s project, she is organizing a community breast cancer walk to help raise funds and awareness about the disease. The walk is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 26 from 2-6 p.m. on the track at North Babylon High School. Community residents are invited to attend and participate.

“I feel that early detection is essential,” Arielle said. “If my mother had found her cancer earlier, she may still be here with us today. If I can have one person, because of my project, go and get themselves checked and detect it early, it will all be worth it.”

In addition to organizing the community walk, Arielle created a breast cancer mosaic, using materials donated by the Deer Park Home Depot, to hang near one of the girls’ locker rooms at the high school. The mosaic, which is a heart with an interlocking pink ribbon, will serve as a subtle reminder to all on the importance of early detection and treatment.
