The West Islip School District wasn’t the only educational institution opening doors on Monday as West Islip is now home to a brand new not-for-profit school called The Bridges Academy.
According to information provided on the school’s website, the school is a grassroots effort led by educators and parents following the closure in June of St. Peter’s Day School in Bay Shore. The school, governed by a board, is located at 339 Snedecor Avenue, West Islip.

Smithtown Public Safety officers arrested a Kings Park man on Wednesday night for helping tend a marijuana plant farm inside a Commack water recharge basin.Mark Kern, 44, is charged with criminal possession of marijuana in the third degree, a felony charge, after undercover town officers found him tending to more than 100 marijuana plants off Vanderbilt Motor Parkway and Redleaf Lane in Commack at 10:22 p.m., according to Public Safety's Deputy Chief Kevin McPadden.
