Police: Deer Park Man Rams Police Cars, Three Arrested

Five people, including two police officers, treated for minor injuries Thursday night.

A short police pursuit in North Babylon Thursday night ended with five people, including two police officers, in the hospital.

According to police, officers attempted to pull over a vehicle on Carlls Patch at 8:23 p.m. and when the driver refused to stop, police followed the 2003 Chevy Suburban. With police closing in, the driver of the Chevy, Carl Chavannes, backed into one police car and then hit another police vehicle, police said.

Chavannes, 30, of Deer Park, was taken into custody in the vicinity of Woods Road and Prairie Drive and charged with second degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, two counts of seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, first degree loitering and resisting arrest.

Two passengers in the Chevy were also arrested. Wayne Dunkley, 29, of Brentwood, and Maurice Thomas, 21, of Deer Park, were both charged with two counts of seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, first degree loitering and resisting arrest.

The three men arrested and two police officers who were in the vehicles that were struck were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center and treated for minor injuries and released.

Chavannes, Dunkley and Thomas are due to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Friday.
