Miller's Prepares 100's of Meals for Sandy Victims

The Deer Park eatery has donated lunch and dinner to reisdents staying at the Robert Frost Red Cross shelter.

Hundreds of Long Islanders were displaced when Hurricane Sandy whipped her ugly head through Long Island, but despite the wreckage she left behind, residents and business owners in Deer Park and North Babylon have come together to support one another.

One of those businesses is Miller's Ale House in Deer Park. Even though the restaurant lost business early last week, during power outages, it is continuing to cut its own profits in order to give people who lost everything, a hot and fresh meal.

On Sunday evening, Miller's donated dinner to the American Red Cross Shelter at Robert Frost Middle School in Deer Park, feeding 108 people who have moved their lives to a cot in the school gym.

"Honestly, we were affected by what happened and we just wanted to do our part," manager Marissa Duffy said. "We can't do much as far as the power outages go, but we have food and we plan to donate as much as we can. We just want to help everyone. People are suffering."

For dinner on Sunday, Red Cross visitors enjoyed a jambalaya dinner with rice, shrimp and sausage, as well as fresh salads.

It was the third meal Miller's has donated to the shelter this week, in addition to bread deliveries.

The dinners are a comfort for those who haven't had a home-cooked meal in days.

"It's a big morale boost for people," Red Cross volunteer Hollyann Woloszyn said.

Woloszyn said that local delis and bagel shops have been donating breakfasts to the shelter, as well.
