North Babylon Blockbuster Closes

Two years ago there were two Blockbuster stores on DPA. Now there are none.

Blockbuster on April 15 shut down its final store in the Town of Babylon, closing its movie and game rental shop on Deer Park Avenue.

The closure comes less than two years after the Blockbuster less than two miles to its north in Deer Park also closed. That space was briefly filled by a furniture store, but the building has since been knocked down and rebuilt as a medical building.

North Babylon residents still eager to rent movies at a Blockbuster will need to drive about 10 miles to another location. Their best bet: Lake Ronkonkoma.

The 1130 Deer Park Ave. location's closing was part of a much bigger downsizing at Blockbuster, which is owned by Dish Network.

Dish Network, which bought Blockbuster a year ago, announced in February that it would close 500 stores nationwide in the first half of 2012.
