Voters Approve Deer Park School Budget

Deer Park voters passed the $103.67 million school district budget by a vote of 1,212 to 416 on Tuesday.

By passing the budget, homeowners within the Deer Park School District will pay a tax levy of 2.99 percent in the coming year.

School Board President John Gouskos, Vice President Keith Rooney and trustees Frank T. Wilkinson and Al Centamore were re-elected to the BOE.

Voters also approved a proposition which includes several capital improvement projects to enhance safety across the district, such as installing surveillance cameras and new parking lot and sidewalk surfaces.

The 2013-14 budget calls for a spending plan of $103,670,546, with a 2.4 percent increase from the current operating budget.

Under the budget, a total of 10 full-time teacher equivalents will be reduced, three of which are retirees and 3.8 of which are part-time or temporary positions.

The board voted in March to close Abraham Lincoln School in June, which will save the district an estimated $349,000 next year, with the potential for lease revenue in the future.
The pre-kindergarten and alternative high school programs will be relocated within the district in September.
