Deer Park Students Hold Successful Food Drives

Students at Deer Park High School and Robert Frost Middle School collected hundreds of nonperishable food items in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, reinforcing their spirit of community service and aiding needy families throughout the Deer Park School District.

The high school’s annual food drive began with students collecting food through the Student Council and their classes, bringing in a variety of items that together will provide meals for the holidays. 

Class advisers then collected food in front of area supermarkets on successive weekends, followed by a homeroom food drive competition in which the winner brought in over 100 items alone. Student Council members then gathered to sort and pack the food, directed by adviser Kerry Walsh. In total, enough surplus food was gathered in the school pantry this year to donate to 22 local families through the holidays and winter. 

At Robert Frost Middle School, more than 30 students from the school’s National Junior Honor Society and adviser Seth Margolin worked to sort and divide cans and boxes, to create balanced meals in every basket, that had accumulated in over two weeks of collecting for the Frost food drive. 

“It’s a lot of effort but the outcome is great,” said NJHS President Celine Marino. “We work really hard to help our community and do the best we can for our school.” 

The food baskets at Frost will provide assistance to families in need throughout the district.
