Town, SPCA Honor Deer Park Firefighters, EMS Unit for Dog Rescue

Firefighters saved dog from house fire earlier this month.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and members of the Babylon Town Board recently joined with the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to honor members of the Deer Park Fire Department rescued a dog from a house fire earlier this month.

A brief ceremony was held at Town Hall to recognize the great work of the Deer Park Fire Department, as well as their Emergency Medical Services (EMS) unit who helped treat the dog on the scene.

On Nov. 6, the Deer Park Fire Department responded to a call of a house fire on Old County Road in Deer Park. Upon entering the home, the firefighters discovered the dog, named DiDi, suffering from the effects of heat exposure and smoke inhalation. The residents of the home were not present at the time of the fire.

After rescuing the dog from the house, the firefighters brought it to a safe area across the street where it received oxygen from the department’s EMS unit. The dog was then taken to Deer Park Animal Hospital and later transported to the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island in West Islip.

The Deer Park Fire Department has also received PETA's Compassionate Fire Department Award for their heroic efforts.
