A vehicle was smashed by an oncoming train Thursday evening when it became stuck on the tracks along Commack Road in Deer Park.
No one was injured in the crash, Mass Transit Authority Police Sergeant Adam Gross, said.
According to witnesses at the scene, the driver had just left Hertz Rental Car near Long Island Avenue, when the borrowed vehicle became stuck on the tracks. Witnesses said that he ran into Hertz for help, but the car remained idle on the tracks. The train struck the vehicle, a white Chevy sedan, at 5:59, Mass Transit Authority Police said.
Service was suspended on the Ronkonkoma branch east of Farmingdale as authorities investigated the accident. The third rail was re-energized at 6:45 p.m. and trains on the Ronkonkoma branch are now running, with delays of up to 75 minutes.
Commack Road is also closed in both directions between Long Island Avenue and Marcus Boulevard.
