More patrols would be nice, but the police can't be everywhere at once. We are responsible for our own safety, but in NYS it is frowned upon to protect yourself from criminal predators. They would rather you play nice victim and give the poor criminal what they want. Unfortunately, not all thugs play nice and take take your things and say thanks.

Vincent, I have many friends who are police officers, so I take offense to your comment. My inquiry was why this was not reported sooner. I didn't know that news organizations waited for police departments to issue press releases (press releases are not issued by the men in blue protecting us). I remember when reporters and news outlets monitored scanners, tracked down sources, asked questions, and actually reported news. I know that the Patch does not have those resources, but one would expect outlets such as Newsday and News 12 to do a better job of keeping the communities informed.

Newsday isn't getting any info out of SCPD. They wrote the article about the SCPD Sgt. caught stealing money from motorists and they wrote the article about the lack of oversight of the islands police departments. We get only the information they want us to have.

John, you are absolutely right. You cannot defend yourself from these thugs....... the defender is the one who has to pay if they protect themselves with self defense.
