Three Arrested in West Islip Hit and Run Crash

Kristofer Busching, 25, of North Babylon, is charged with leaving the scene of crash that critically injured West Islip teen.

Detectives arrested three people Sunday in connection with a hit and run crash last week that critically injured a West Islip teen, police said.

Police say the driver of a 2012 Chrysler 300, Kristofer Busching, 25, of North Babylon, left the scene after striking the teen on Udall Road on New Year's Eve.

Busching, his passenger, Carlo Caamano, and Alicia Santamaria, Busching’s girlfriend who was not present at the time of the incident, then attempted to cover up the crime, police said.

The teen, whose name and age has not been released by police, was found lying on the road unconscious. He remains in critical condition, police said.

Busching is charged with first degree assault, leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury, fifth degree conspiracy, criminal mischief and petty larceny.

Caamano, 19, of Bay Shore, is charged with second degree hindering prosecution, fifth degree conspiracy, criminal mischief and petty larceny. Santamaria, 23, of Bay Shore, is charged with second degree hindering prosecution and fifth degree conspiracy.

All three will be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Monday.

Did Alicia Santamaria grow up in West Islip? She looks very familiar. This whole thing is very sad. Personally, I blame all the parents of these people. We require teachers, doctors, lawyers and anyone that has a responsible job that can impact the lives of others to be trained and licensed, yet anyone can become a parent. Reading all the posts and hearing/witnessing so many tragedies in our society, at it's core all of this is the blame of poor parenting!

This is tragic and I hope this young man pulls through. Kris is a disturbed individual, this is not the only person victimized by his rage and if he is not adequately held accountable it won't be the last. So let's hope that justice is served. With all that being said, it seems like many of you on here are local parents and residents. I work locally at a place where kids often go with their peers and no parents and you should all be alarmed by what's going on with the youth in your town. Everyone has this defensive "not my kid attitude" but instead of saying that you really need to take actions to make sure that it's really not your kid. They have adapted a lifestyle that puts a high priority on parties and drugs, and I'm not just talking about marijuana. These kids are doing ecstacy, pills, lsd, drinking robutossin to hollucinate, binge drinking regularly. With the renewed popularity of electronic music, raves and rave type house parties with blacklights and such I feel it's become a breeding ground for drugs and reckless behaivor. Everyone needs to be aware. I hear what they talk about and are excited about and its actually scary. Also if you want to keep your child safe ask questions even if it annoys them, drive them and pick them up. Especially if they're going to be on a road notorious for accidents involving pedestrians. Major holidays are known for unsafe driving, I'm 26 and to this day I know if I need my parents will come get me because they always have.
