LIPA: Nearly All of W. Babylon Without Power

LIPA is reporting over 18,000 outages in West Babylon alone in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

The Long Island Power Authority is reporting over 18,000 in West Babylon following the brutal beating Hurricane Sandy put on the tri-state area.

LIPA's Storm Center Outage website said 18,236 homes were without power as of 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, nearly 8 hours after Hurricane Sandy made landfall in New Jersey. Those outages account for nearly 37.5% of the 48,600 out in the Town of Babylon alone.

Conflicting reports said much of Babylon Village has lost power, but LIPA is only reporting 188 outages total as of 4:30 a.m.

LIPA is repoting over 920,000 customers without power Island-wide as of 4:30 a.m., leaving roughly 80.5% of Long Island without electricity.

Estimated times of restoration are still not available through LIPA, which reported it would not send crews out into depowered areas until it was safe due to high winds and record high flooding along the shorelines.

Earlier on Monday, LIPA had some 3,700 outages in West Babylon before Sandy made landfall. The number continued to climb as winds increased to 50 to 70 mph and gusts as high as 94 mph were recorded on Long Island.

Here's some helpful tips if you're stuck in the dark:

  • LIPA's Outage Hotline number is 1-800-490-0075 or 631-755-6900,
