Odd / Even Gas Rationing Starts Friday

Starting tomorrow, the last digit of your license plate will determine when you can buy gas.

New York City will establish gas rationing starting Friday to help reduce wait times and long lines at gas stations in the five boroughs.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed an emergency order Thursday to establish an odd-even license plate system for gasoline purchases, starting 6 a.m. on Friday.

The temporary odd-even system will remain in effect until further notice, and will operate as follows:

  • Vehicles with license plates ending in an even number or the number “0” can make purchases of motor fuel on even numbered days.
  • Vehicles with license plates ending in an odd number can make purchases of motor fuel on odd numbered days.
  • Vehicles with licenses plates ending in a letter or other character can make purchases on odd numbered days.
  • Commercial vehicles, emergency vehicles, buses and paratransit vehicles, Medical Doctor (MD) plates and vehicles licensed by the Taxi and Limousine Commission are exempt.

Can you imagine what the people who would benefit from subway service in your area would say if there were actually a plan to build it! Just look at the opposition to building a subway link to LaGuardia Airport! People might USE it, and we can't have that!

And yet New Yorkers voted in the same incompetent people. So stop complaining.

It is really quite shjort sighted and silly to think that we could ever really be prepared for a disaster..You cannot build everything for tyhe worst case and still aford anything.. We need to have good response and follow up. We also need ot expect that these events will take some time to sort out when they occure.. we need to have lower expecxtations (not getting gas because the EM and disaster responders need the fuel and \eveyoojne else should expect to sit home for several weeks doing nothing unbtil things are running again..)

Aside from the fact that they are just answering an obvious question before it is asked, Pod is completely correct... Zero or zed is neither odd nor even, it does not exist in this context.. numbers larger than one that end in zero are even because they are divisible by 2..

When I was a kid I remember the building of Kings Plaza.. Part of the deal was that they were going to extend the IRT from the Junction on Nostrand and Flatbush down Flatbush all the way down to the new development.. It never happened because the people in the neighborhood protested until the plan disappeared.. No one wants low income people to have free access to their neighborhood.. To many peoples minds the subways do not bring yuppies, they bring crime, housing projects and poverty..Until we fix that dynamic there will always be last minute opposition to these projects.
