Shelter & Safe Haven in Deer Park and N. Babylon

Residents south of Montauk Highway are required to evacuate, as town is in state of emergency.

The American Red Cross has set up a shelter at Robert Frost Middle School in Deer Park for residents in the Town of Babylon who have been required to evacuate.

Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer issued an executive order declaring a State of Emergency for the entire Town of Babylon ahead of Hurricane Sandy's arrival on Sunday afternoon.

A mandatory evacuation of the beach communities and all areas south of Montauk Highway in the Town of Babylon, Village of Amityville, Village of Babylon and Village of Lindenhurst is now in effect.

Those needing to move to higher ground are advised to take advantage of the Red Cross shelter at the middle school, located at 450 Half Hollow Road, Deer Park 11729. Medical assistance will be available to those with health vulnerabilities and require assistance with daily living activities, Suffolk County officials said.

The Town has also designated the Babylon Town Hall Annex (281 Phelps Lane, North Babylon, NY 11703) as a place of safe haven.

For families with pets, the Brentwood Recreation Center (99 Third Avenue, Brentwood 11717) is a designated pet-friendly shelter.

Anyone planning on utilizing shelters should bring medications and disposable medical supplies.
