Town Hall Annex Repair Work Approved

Babylon to spend $1.75 million on upgrades to former North Babylon elementary school.

Babylon’s Town Hall Annex in North Babylon will be receiving a much-needed facelift.

With approval of the Town Council, Babylon will now spend up to $1.75 million to repair several aspects of the building that dates back to the 1950s.

Newsday reported that repairs will be made to the heating system, roof, windows and interior of the building that once served as Phelps Lane Elementary School. In 1987, the North Babylon School District sold the building to the town for $900,000.

Town Supervisor Richard Schaffer described the building as being “very tired” and “worn down,” but noted it gets used around the clock seven days a week by town employees and numerous community groups.

Among the current offices housed in the Annex are the Youth Bureau, Drug and Alcohol Services, Public Safety, Human Services and the Fire Marshal.
