Town of Babylon Named a 'Tree City' by Arbor Day Foundation

The Town of Babylon was recently been named as a 2013 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, citing the Town’s commitment to planting and caring for trees throughout the Town.

There are 3,400 other towns and cities across the country that have been named as a Tree City USA for implementing effective forest management policies.

This honor further cements the Town of Babylon as one of the top “green” communities in the country, Town officials said.

In order to become a Tree City USA, a town or city must meet the following requirements: operating a tree department or committee, issuing an ordinance for tree-care, maintaining an annual forestry budget of $2 per capital and an observance of Arbor Day. The Arbor Day Foundation cites cleaner air, improved waterways, energy savings, increased property values and attraction of commercial activity as benefits to these communities.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in a partnership with the United States Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. For more information on the program, visit www.arborday.org/TreeCityUSA.
