Town Officials Honor Hometown NBA Star Danny Green

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon recently recognized North Babylon native Danny Green of the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs for his work in the community with his Team Green Basketball Camp, which teaches basketball fundamentals and the value of teamwork to local children of all ages. 

A presentation was held on the basketball courts of the Town Hall Annex on Phelps Lane with members of the camp in attendance.

The Team Green Basketball Camp was founded in 2009 by Danny’s father, Danny Green Sr., and is held at Robert Moses Middle School in North Babylon. For the past four years, the NBA star has returned home to lead the camp, which features clinics, drills and team games to help participants improve their skills while emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship both on and off the court. Green made headlines this summer with his record-setting performance in the 2013 NBA Finals, where he made the most three-point field goals in NBA Finals history despite losing the seven game series to the Miami Heat.

Green was a two-sport athlete at North Babylon High School, where he played both basketball and football before transferring to St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset. Following his high school career, Green enrolled in the University of North Carolina where he played for four years on the Tar Heels basketball team. 

Green had a celebrated career at UNC, where he set team and conference records while leading his team to a NCAA Division 1 Championship victory in 2009. Following his team’s championship victory, Green declared for the NBA Draft where he was selected in the second round by the Cleveland Cavaliers before joining the San Antonio Spurs.
