Town Releases New Yard Waste Schedule for New Year

Town will be divided up into new Yard Waste Zones for scheduled pick-ups.

The Town of Babylon recently announced changes to the 2014 recycling schedule throughout the town's boundaries, including new zones for pick-ups.

The 2014 edition of the calendar will implement Yard Waste Zones (YWZs), broken down by region and divided by main roadways that slice through the town.

Yard waste, in this case, applies to items such as tree branches, leaves, brush and grass clippings.

The zones are as follows:

  • Zone 1 – South of Montauk Highway – Monday
Zone 2 – North of Montauk Highway, South of Sunrise Highway – Tuesday
  • Zone 3 – North of Sunrise Highway, South of Southern State Parkway – Wednesday
  • Zone 4 – North of Southern State Parkway, South of Long Island Avenue – Thursday
  • Zone 5 – North of Long Island Avenue or Long Island Rail Road tracks – Friday

“This new system of picking up our residents’ yard waste is more environmentally friendly and increases efficiency to provide better service to our taxpayers,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “By picking up yard waste by zone, we will be cutting down on thousands of truck miles driven while saving fuel costs."

Yard waste will not be picked up by the town on holidays and will be picked up the normal day the following week.

Schaffer added:  "I urge our residents to consult their 2014 recycling calendar for more information on this, as well as everything you need to know about recycling and garbage pick-up.”
