Book Fairs Get Deer Park Elementary Students Excited About Reading

Book fairs held recently at Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams and May Moore elementary schools.

Recent Scholastic book fairs at Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams and May Moore elementary schools brought excitement to many young readers, who happily browsed the racks searching for that special author or character, while raising funds for the schools’ Parent Teacher Associations.

“The book fair is extremely important because it encourages our children to read books,” said JQA PTA Co-president Darlene Piazza.

“It allows fresh books to be in the kids’ hands,” added May Moore PTA member Kris Rosales, the organization’s former president. “The fair really gets them excited about reading.”

Popular new sequel “Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses” by James and Kelly Dean was the runaway best seller at JQA, Piazza noted, while the most popular titles at May Moore this year, according to its PTA, included the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and “Rainbow Magic” series and tie-in books for shows like “Sofia the First,” “Bubble Guppies,” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

JQA’s book fair helps fund a variety of in-school assemblies. May Moore utilizes its book fair proceeds to purchase more reading material for children.

“We just ordered 550 books to be delivered by ‘Santa’ to each and every student,” said Rosales.
