Deer Park Approves School Budget By 3-1 Margin
Voters pass next year's $101 million spending plan Tuesday.
Deer Park School District residents approved the proposed 2012-13 school budget Tuesday, which includes a 2.5 percent increase in the tax levy that is within the state’s mandated tax levy cap
Local residents approved the $101.2 million budget by a margin of 1326-489.
The turnout, described as 'a little lighter than last year' by Deer Park Teachers’ Association President Bruce Sander, was nonetheless a vote of confidence, according to Schools Superintendent Eva Demyen.

"The margin of victory was almost 3 to 1," she said moments after the results were announced. "But when you maintain programs and produce a lean budget, that's what happens."
To avoid staffing and program cuts, the The negotiations saved the district $1.2 million. In addition, teachers have taken advantage of a retirement incentive, which will save an additional $1.5 million.

"This was an extremely tough year for schools all over the state," said school board member Ron Wayne. "But we controlled our expenses and found some efficiencies."
Residents also re-elected board of education trustees Donna Elliot (1198 votes) and Robert Marino (1016), both of whom ran unopposed.
"It's a wonderful feeling to know you have a community that stands behind you," said Elliot. "It helps us to be energized to do the right thing by our children."
