Deer Park Math Squad Shines at Suffolk Tournament

Two out of Deer Park High School’s five math teams participated in the 2014 Suffolk County Math Tournament, held at Suffolk County Community College, with student Aaron Zhang earning first place for juniors for the second year in a row.

The school’s quintet of upperclassmen – Kyle Devine, Sabrina Grunseich, Andreas Stamatakis, Nick Vitale and Zhang – won fifth place overall. The freshman/sophomore team consisting of Ryan Byrne, Joseph Curry, Peter Demopoulos, Theresa Grimaldi and Joseph Sanchez competed but did not place.

The team, known as the Deer Park Math Squad, has attended the tournament for more than eight years. Students prep by practicing questions from past competitions, aided by teacher and Math Squad coach Kevin McCreesh.
