Deer Park Board of Education Trustee Ron Wayne announced his resignation Tuesday, after serving the district for more than 16 years.
Wayne said that he and his wife will be moving to Smithtown.
I’ll be leaving Deer Park after 27 years as a resident and after more than 16 years on the boe
"I've come to love this district and I’ve come to love this town. It’s time to go. I leave this district in great hands," he said in an emotional speech during his last board of education meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 22 at the high school.
"I look around and this district is going places and I’ll always treasure these years and friendship," he added.
Superintendent Eva Demyen said that Wayne's background in financial management has been a tremendous help to the district when configuring the school district's budget for many years.
“I've been honored over the past 10 years to have known Mr. Wayne in many aspects of his contributions to this district," she said. "Your expertise in fiscal management and the budgetary process - there’s going to be a huge hole there when we go through the budget season this year."
"I wish you the best of luck as you start your new venture," she said.
Demyen said that the board will decide to appointment a new trustee after the new year.
"It has been an amazing 16-and-a-half years," Wayne said.
His resignation is effective Saturday, Dec. 22.
