Deer Park School Board Honors Teachers and Students

Following the passing of the budget, the district hands out awards to some special students, and teachers.

It was time to say goodbye to those moving on, and 'thanks' to those who have stuck around in the Deer Park School District. The board of education held its open meeting at the high school Tuesday night, and celebrated the teachers and their efforts through the year, or in some cases, many years.

Several teachers were awarded tenure, and retirees were given a fond farewell before an appreciative crowd. Then there were those honored for reaching the milestone of 25 or 30 years with the district.

Barbara Hosking has them all beat. The Kennedy teacher was given a standing ovation and honored for her 50 years of service to the district. One of her former students, board member Keith Rooney, presented her with her award.

"I just want to say it has been most of my life that I've spent here in Deer Park, and that I've loved almostevery minute of it," Hosking told the audience.

Also honored was Deer Park High teacher David Knuffke, who among other accolades was named 2012 High School Science Teacher of the Year for Suffolk County's branch of the Science Teachers Association of New York State. Knuffke also serves on several advisory capacities for the College Board which deal with creating the Advanced Placement test in biology.

Frost student Gianna Locker won first place in the Babylon Covantage Scholarship program for having the top science project with an eco-tech theme. In this case, how to deal with problem of goose droppings (for lack of a better term) in the town.

Kennedy students Adriene Campos and Alyssa Rivera won first and second place, respectively in the Covanta Recycling Poster contest.

High school student student Jeremy Friend was recognized for his efforts in securing a donation of six IPads to his school, courtesy of the Kristin Green Foundation.

In other BOE business, the district officially authorized the issuing of $18 million in tax anticipation notes in for the upcoming school year.

Also, the district reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the Healthy Schools NY program as part of the physical education department. It is meant to help students choose wisely in terms of nutrition and lifestyle.

The next BOE open meeting is Tuesday June 12, 8 p.m. at the high school.
