Marion G. Vedder Elementary Gets in the Spirit of Giving

Students raised money for victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

In the spirit of giving and supporting others in the community and the world at
large, the student council and co-advisers Dawn Hovanec and Jeanette Roberto of
North Babylon’s Marion G. Vedder Elementary School hosted various fundraisers
in November.

Following the devastation in the Philippines caused by Typhoon Haiyan, students
participated in “Fill a Heart for the Philippines” by donating $1 to color a heart
that was used to decorate the school’s main hallway. The money raised will be
donated to the American Red Cross. The student council also collected toiletries
and wrote letters of encouragement to the families that have been affected. The
goods and letters will be sent to the Queens Bible Church in Glendale, NY, which
will forward all donations at no cost to the Philippines.

Additionally, the student council hosted an arts-and-crafts supply drive, with
all materials collected being donated to the children’s ward at Good Samaritan
Hospital.
