May Moore Primary School Honors Memory of 9/11

Dressed in patriotic red, white and blue, staff and students at May Moore Primary School in Deer Park participated in a variety of events on Sept. 11 in remembrance of the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. 

“We recognized how very important it is to honor this time in history as Americans,” May Moore Principal Alicia Konecny said. 

 After two second-graders recited the Pledge of Allegiance over the loudspeaker, students from pre-K through second grade planted flags throughout the school grounds while patriotic and inspirational songs played in the background, including “America the Beautiful,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” Mariah Carey’s “Hero” and Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land.”

In the classrooms, teachers shared an age-appropriate 2001 book about the events of 9/11, Andrea Patel’s uplifting “On That Day,” and other material for young children from the National September 11 Memorial & Museum’s website.

“Although our young students weren’t born when these tragic events took place, it is important to remember that Sept. 11 revealed the profound human capacity to care for one another that transcends differences of nationality, religion and political affiliation,” Konecny said. “By planting American flags on our school grounds, we unite as a learning community with a focus on patriotism and citizenship.”
