MGV Focuses on Cyber Safety

In an ongoing effort to raise student awareness of the dangers of social media; promote unity; and provide opportunities to teach and reinforce bullying prevention activities and skills, North Babylon’s Marion G. Vedder Elementary School hosted a cyber safety workshop for its fourth- and fifth-grade students.

Presented by Suffolk County Police Officer Jeanne Osias, the workshop focused on sharing information on social media sites, such as Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook, limiting interaction with strangers online, as well as cyberbullying.

“You have to think about what you do online,” Osias said. “Make sure what you do is safe and that you let your parents know what you are doing online, because once you put something online, you lose control over it completely.”

In addition to the student workshops, parents were invited to attend a similar presentation that encompassed the same subjects their children learned, as well as information designed to increase parent awareness on how to protect their children online.
