North Babylon Special Ed Teachers Honored

SCOPE lauds Jeannine Gryn and Stacy Cahill for their work in developing new programs being used in local schools.

Two North Babylon special education teachers were honored recently by a county organization for their work in developing new programs designed to help special-needs students.

The Suffolk County Organization for the Promotion of Education (SCOPE) named Jeannine Gryn and Stacy Cahill as the recipients of the 2012 SCOPE Awards of Educational Excellence for Teaching. Both women teach at Marion G. Vedder Elementary School.

This school year, the North Babylon School District implemented two new special education programs that service incoming kindergarten students with complex needs, including cerebral palsy and Down’s syndrome. Working cooperatively, the two teachers provide their students with the educational, physical and social support needed for success, school district officials said.

“These women are exceptional teachers and understand the meaning of teamwork,” said Patricia Godek, superintendent of schools for the North Babylon School District. “They are simply remarkable.”

Kerry Larke, principal at Marion G. Vedder, said Gryn and Cahill have shared their knowledge with the special area teachers and created unique opportunities for the school district’s mainstreamed students to work alongside its special needs students.

“They work hand-in-hand with our speech language pathologist and occupational therapist in developing life skills that will build the foundation these students need for future successes,” said Larke. “They have opened our doors to welcome these special students and have achieved remarkable success.”

Gryn and Cahill recently received their honors at the SCOPE Educational Excellence Awards ceremony held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook.
