The performing arts will be celebrated in the Deer Park School District on Sept. 30 with a special Theatre Night in the high school auditorium.
During the event, the school will announce the founding of a chapter of the International Thespian Society at the school and induct members, according to an announcement released by the school. Members will also be inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society.
Superintendent of Schools Eva Demyen and Deer Park Arts Council President Ron Becker are scheduled to speak that night along with special guest speaker Judith Malina, a well-known actress (“Dog Day Afternoon,” “Awakenings,” “The Addams Family”), and cofounder of the Living Theatre, the oldest experimental theater company in the country. Malina will discuss the power and use of theater.
Students will be able to participate in a workshop with Living Theatre actors, performing selections from Malina’s play, “Here We Are.”
An overview of the theater program in Deer Park for the 2013-2014 school year will be presented. This season will include the One Act Play Festival and Shakespeare Festival, the high school’s winter play and spring musical, and scheduled plays at Robert Frost Middle School, John F. Kennedy Intermediate School, John Quincy Adams Primary School and May Moore Primary School.
