Challenges Aside, Towers Still Blooms in North Babylon

Thirty years in, Towers Flowers is still competing on Deer Park Avenue and beyond.

Thirty years ago, Pete and Jane McBride opened Towers Flowers in North Babylon. The business remains in the family's hands, under the direction of their son, Peter.

Patch spoke to Peter about the industry, the business and how it's changed - and hasn't.

Your parents started the business, but how long have you been involved?  I was 14 when it opened. I took it over in the 1990s.

How has the business changed over the last three decades?  The competition isn't local anymore. It's online and national. We used to compete with florists up and down Deer Park Avenue. Not anymore.

What's the biggest challenge with competing against national chains and websites?  We can do everything they can do. We have national and international delivery. We are as sophisticated as any chain or marketing company. We have a robust website, but people still come in here and ask us if we have a website. Yes, we do.

What are you most proud of? Our flower section, because we have a very big selection and the flowers are fresh. They're going to last. We are offering high quality at a fair price.
