Eagle Scout Creates War Memorial

15-year-old honors all armed forces personnel with tribute in Deer Park.

All members of the U.S. armed forces will now be honored for their service in their hometown due to the work of 15-year-old Timothy Vierling, who created a war memorial for his Eagle Scout project.

Most boys don't earn the Eagle Scout rank until age 18, but Vierling is on the fast track, taking on the project three years early.

The tribute, located at Pine Acres Park, is a dedication to all the different branches of the United States military members, living or deceased, regardless of whether they were in a specific war or not. Timothy modeled his project after a similar memorial behind the Old North Church in Boston for those who served in the Iraq War.

"I felt like there needed to be a memorial dedicated to all military personnel, they needed the recognition," Vierling said.

The Eagle Scout began planning his project when he was a Star Scout at age 13, and finished in May of this year. He visited local merchants with his design in hand, collecting donations and necessary materials to put his project together. Vierling purchased military dog tags with the name of the living or deceased military person and the branch and/or conflict served.

The 15-year-old said that he wants his project to represent the respect he has for all veterans because he feels they truly deserve it.
