Schools Open, Sports Start, Remembering 9/11

There's a lot going on in North Babylon and Deer Park this week.

The Deer Park and North Babylon school districts are both open now that Deer Park had its opening day on Monday. With it comes the fall sports season.

The Babylon area also remembers those lost on Sept. 11, twelve years ago.

Here is a look ahead to everything you need to know:

Back to School: Vacation is over for everyone in both school districts, as well as St. Cyril and Methodius, which started last week. So, if you're reading this and have a healthy 4th grader playing Minecraft on the iPad in the living room, um, better get the backpack stuffed. Better late than never.

Bulldogs Sports: Sports is in full swing throughout the area, and if you're looking for a specific event, visit the Section XI site for more details. Here are a few highlights: North Babylon's football team travels to Riverhead for a Thursday tilt. Tonight at 6 p.m., the varsity girls soccer team plays at Phelps Lane against Deer Park. The girls then play at Centereach on Thursday. The boys soccer team hosts Elwood/J. Glenn on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

We know there are plenty of other sporting events in North Babylon this week. We promise to highlight various teams in this space throughout the season, but the Section XI site has it all.

Falcons Sports: As mentioned above, Deer Park's varsity girls soccer team takes on North Babylon tonight. The girls are right back at it on Tuesday against Lindenhurst. On Sept. 11, the Deer Park varsity football team hosts Rocky Point. That game starts at 6 p.m. On the same day, the varsity girls tennis team hosts Copiague.

Remembering Sept. 11: The Deer Park Fire Department had a ceremony in memory of those who died in the terrorist attacks.

Meanwhile, on its website, the North Babylon Fire Department said it will join many other local fire departments and dignitaries in a Memorial Service at Cedar Beach on Ocean Parkway at 7:00 pm.

All are invited to join in honoring those who lost their life.

Library Update: If you're wondering what's on tap this week at the Deer Park Public Library, here is a link to their calendar of events. The North Babylon Public Library's newsletter is online.
