Abraham Lincoln School to Close

Pre-kindergarten and alternative high school programs to relocate in September 2013.

The Deer Park Board of Education voted Tuesday to close Abraham Lincoln School, which currently houses a pre-kindergarten program and alternative high school, at the end of the school year.

Beginning in September 2013, pre-K students will be relocated to May Moore and John Quincy Adams elementary schools, while alternative high school students will report to Deer Park High School, according to a bulletin posted on the district's website.

During the Board of Education's monthly meeting Tuesday, Superintendent Eva Demyen estimated the closure will save the district approximately $349,000 for the 2013-14 school year.

It was not immediately clear if the closure would result in staff cuts, however Demyen announced earlier in the budget season that approximately four percent of the district's staff would be reduced in order to cut costs.

The district is currently working to close an estimated $2.8 million budget shortfall.
